In 1984 this VK Commodore SL started life as a very plain 6 cylinder with a 5 speed manual gearbox and probably graced the driveway of a suburban family providing many years of loyal service.
Fast forward to nearly 40 years and what you see now is the ultimate classic cruiser with real performance and modern reliability. This is a car for the whole family to enjoy in comfort.
Here are the build details as nothing has been left out or compromised. After reading and viewing the photos and video you will see that this standard of car could not be replicated for the asking price.
Drive Train:
5.7L LS1 from a VZ SS having a documented 160klm when purchased. The engine required very little work but received reconditioning to the heads, all new gaskets and seals, mild cam and a tune. The engine retains all standard emission controls such as air flow meter plus hi flow cats and standard air box. New Extractors have been fitted fitted. Throttle pedal now electric control.
Transmission is T56 6 speed manual from the same donor car. Fitted shorter offset gear stick to suit VK position. New VZ gear knob fitted. New clutch was fitted at the time of install. Tuff mounts provided the conversion kit which included engine mounts, transmission mount and right to left starter motor relocation kit with hi torque starter motor. Clutch pedal assembly converted from cable to hydraulic.
Rear axle from a VL and built by Geelong diffs. Is LSD with axles same as VL turbo. Standard width flange to flange for VL. Driveshaft is 2 piece but slightly uprated.
Aircon compressor kit supplied by Castlemaine rod shop. Cooling system is an aluminium Aussie desert cooler with twin thermos fans which are controlled by the engine ECU. ECU is mounted under left hand guard.
Under bonnet area pretty much standard VK. Fuses and relays left in there as car had to have heater and aircon. Fuel tank from VS with higher flow electric fuel pump installed. Fuel system completed by LSX extreme with filters as well as carbon canister install up back.
Brakes:
Front discs and callipers have been upgraded to larger VT model and adapter hubs with bearings. Rear brakes are VL disc also with handbrake operating an internal drum. Booster upgraded to plastic VS and a VT master cylinder adapted.
Interior:
All standard SL interior with internal door locks converted to side versions. New carpet installed. Seats immaculate. New headliner installed. Dash pad repaired and all plastics repainted. Custom instrument panel built using new VDO gauges. Speedo is electronic. Tacho electronic. Fuel sender unit recalibrated to suit gauge. MOMO steering wheel. Tinted windows. New door seals fitted. New seatbelts throughout. Sony blue tooth stereo with rear speakers. Front door skins have not been butchered.
Body:
The body was 100% rust free from the start. Genuine HDT supplied group A rear wing, grill and front bumper lower. Painted in Alpine white with black window frames. Stainless trims fitted to roof gutters and front and rear bumpers. Wheels genuine HDT 19” Aero with 235/35 tyres fitted on all four corners. Rear rims machined back 4mm to clear guards. Gas strut fitted to boot to hold up due to extra weight of the wing. Tow bar fitted. New tail lights fitted as well as front indicators.
Suspension:
All bushes and ball joints new in front end including strut tops. Kings springs all round (low). New Monroe shocks fitted to rear.
Registration:
Fully engineered by Peter Turner and can be fully registered or placed on club permit. Has blue plate plus all documentation. Car to be sold un registered as is currently on club plates which is not transferable.
